What makes you click on an outfit post nowadays? It’s not a secret that new blogs are popping up daily and that most of these are fashion blogs. The result: OOTDs as far as you can see. Is that abbreviation even still in use? To me it feels like a long gone past of fashion blogging. And still the hashtag #ootd has over 85 million results on Instagram. 85 million outfits that want to be looked at, liked, and commented. Obviously we all just follow a certain number of bloggers and it’s their outfit posts we check out on a regular basis. That’s why we mostly follow those girls and boys with a style that we admire, that we would even like to copy in some way. And still.
At a time when outfits are getting more and more simplistic and when every season has about 5 trend items that every blogger buys, I ask myself the question what makes a reader still click on all of these outfit posts. Seriously I feel like I’ve seen it all. Of course the one or the other outfit still surprises me, but the times when fashion bloggers managed to amaze me with every single of their posts are long gone. I’m not saying all of this to criticizes the blogosphere, as that has been done often enough, but I’m asking this question because I’ve been wondering more and more what the sense of a fashion blog is nowadays.
All of the blogging coaches will tell you that the purpose of every post should be to entertain, inform or inspire, but in how far does that apply to most of those 85 million outfit posts out there? If we’ve seen it all (not only the clothes but also every possible outfit location) and if we can read all possible fashion tips at a mouse click, and if we mostly don’t even read the texts that go with an outfit post, then how can they be useful at all? Or is it clear that they aren’t but we enjoy them anyway because they still manage to emit a lifestyle that we envy?
Strolls through a cosmopolitan city on a Sunday morning, enjoying a coffee over freshly bought flowers from the market, watching the sunset over the sea in a light dress,… In outfit posts it mostly looks like those are the main activities of all fashion bloggers. So what is it that makes you click on an outfit post nowadays? What made you click on this outfit post? It hasn't been shot in a great location and I'm not wearing the latest designer bag. It's just my way of combining my DIY smiley loafers. Or was it the question in the title that led you here?
